A MODERN “CLASSIC” COLONIAL

Bethesda, MD

My clients wanted a grown-up house that was elegant but comfortable enough for entertaining. They both favored a warm color palette and had some beautiful heirloom quality items for us to work with.

PROJECT

I love a layered room. Our base layer in the family room was a large overdyed traditional wool rug that anchored the space. We used a faux ostrich fabric on the back of the sofa in a soft teal and then matched it with a soft chenille in the same tone on the cushions. I can often be found saying that “The lighting is the jewelry of the room.”   A show-stopping chandelier was added to center the living room with a little bling. My client’s art collection was then put into groupings to fill the wall space and add interest.

Nothing beats a fabulous piece of art! I was thrilled to design the dining room around my client’s choice. We had slipcovers made for their old chairs in a neutral polka dot allowing for worry-free leisurely dinner parties. This project was a true balance of restraint and adventure.

Alexa Harris Ralff, AHR Designs, Baltimore

“Alexa helped us with a tricky living room. While we talked to others, Alexa really listened to our thoughts, concerns and needs. She came up with a plan that was both practical and looked great. She picked fabrics for chairs, ordered furniture that was the correct scale, found us window treatments and kept us informed all along the way.

She saved us time dealing with all the overwhelming choices, colors and patterns out there.

We are so pleased and can’t recommend her enough.”
