Our old house had a nice big kitchen that had been added onto twice, we think, but the last update had been in 1984. When I walked in before we bought it a few years ago, I knew this was the right house but that we would need to make radical changes in the kitchen. At that point it had large expanses of black granite counters and oak veneer cabinets. The floor was uneven, tile cracked, partial hardwood in rough shape. Even so, we had many good years there with family and friends until I started to be embarrassed to have anyone join us in the kitchen.
We had spent several years updating other things, but once drawers stopped opening and doors broke off their hinges, it was time. We had also realized that there were system and structural things in the kitchen we needed to correct, so GUT JOB.
I had worked with AHR briefly on some living-room updates, and she had helped my son and daughter-in-law furnish their large new house, so I knew I trusted Alexa so I asked her to take on our kitchen re-design. She immediately saw that we needed an architect, and we went from there.

- Reliable sense of process: ‘what comes ‘next’ — I could never have scoped this out without AHR, who knew when it was time to order appliances, hardware, and every other stage of a complicated project
- Very skilled at working smoothly with contractors and providers, which saved us endless headaches we have experienced in other house improvement projects
- With every design decision, AHR provided legitimate options. There were no duds, just beautiful options that anticipated our tastes
- Responsive when I panicked about tariffs and potential price increases, so we fronted decisions about fixtures, etc.
- Outstanding understanding of kitchen layout design, that gave us really good kitchen flow, maximum storage without compromising our requests to do such things as hiding a small microwave oven, etc.
- Attention to detail, such us placement of the floor exhaust vent, exact cabinet placement
- And here’s the best: I love the overall design and feel good and happy every time I walk into our new kitchen. It now feels updated but in keeping with our old house.

We’ve known Alexa for years and when it was time to renovate two bathrooms in our home, she was our first call. From Alexa’s design ideas, to her cheerful presence, and attention to detail, the process was smooth and easy, and we couldn’t be happier with our new spaces. Prior to working with Alexa, I struggled to get the look I loved in our home. I would frequently end up regretting my purchases or being afraid to do anything other than matching sets. We now have so many pieces in our house that we love and reflect our personality / vision. HIGHLY recommend! As recent empty nesters, my husband and I wanted to refresh our home which hadn’t seen a lick of new paint in 15 years. We don’t enjoy nor have the time to design and shop for paint and furnishings. We tried a few local designers first, even paid one for a few months’ work but stopped when we realized we were being sold things without being listened to.
A custom kitchen designer who we selected to redesign our kitchen recommended Alexa, saying that she is the ONLY designer he would ever recommend. Now we understand why.
At the in-home consultation she listened to our long rambling wants and desires list, understood and respected our budget, and held our hand through the whole process, making herself available via text and email to answer all our endless questions. We asked her to “treat us like toddlers”, offering us Choice A or Choice B to keep things simple, and she did just that. We were nervous about buying custom furniture without trying it first, but we have been absolutely delighted with the results. Alexa, understanding our taste and stye, recommended colors, patterns, and fabrics we would never in a million years have chosen for ourselves. The finished product far exceeds our expectations.
A few weeks have passed since “install day” when all the new furniture, rugs, and window treatments were delivered and we still walk around the house amazed at how beautiful everything looks, how well the house reflects our personality, taste, and style, and how this “brand new house” feels like home.
Don’t waste your time or money with anyone else.
We wanted a modern kitchen that still fit the style of our 1860’s Victorian- not an easy task. And we could not be happier with the kitchen Alexa and her team designed for us. It’s a gorgeous space, meets all our needs, and fits seamlessly with the architecture of our home. Not to mention that Alexa is knowledgeable, professional, and an absolute joy to work with.
I cannot rave enough about my experience working with Alexa and the AHR team! AHR designed our entire brand-new townhome and we could not be happier with the experience and the results! Our journey with Alexa started over 2 years ago. We presented her with a complex and large whole house renovation, 3 strong personalities with differing tastes, and a budget.

Alexa developed a design and color scheme which utilized my existing furniture, updating my living room, dining room, and hall to make them brighter and more contemporary. She had ideas I never would have thought of on my own!
We recently moved out of a large home we lived in for 35 years. We always did our own decorating but it took 35 years to complete. We wanted our new home ready quickly and wanted to use 95% of the furniture and artwork we already had. Alexa was exactly what we needed. She was happy to incorporate the old with some exciting new items. She embraced and encouraged our quirky, eclectic taste while subduing some of our wilder ideas. She was sensitive to budget and pleased to change things that didn’t work. Alexa is available whenever we need her and is a pleasure to work with.
Alexa is an absolute dream to work with! We hired her for two separate projects and she exceeded our expectations on both. For one project, in addition to decorating, she also consulted on the construction of our addition and designed our custom made built-in unit. I am so grateful to have been introduced to Alexa. Not only does she have impeccable taste, but she is practical – which as someone with three kids and a dog – I need! Alexa has an incredible ability to infuse your point of you with her design elements. I was amazed at her first presentation how much I liked everything she chose and was able to tie together my existing home aesthetic with the new rooms. Working with Alexa has been such an enjoyable and positive experience. She manages and coordinates every step of the project and is always responsive to any question.
Alexa of AHR made our renovation and redecoration possible! She “project managed” to make sure we decided on everything from tile and lighting to faucets and knobs to kitchen cabinets and granite before our contractors needed those decisions. In my absence, she interfaced with the contractors and subcontractors, she prepared and distributed the “paint plan” to the painters, she even accepted deliveries for me! She shopped for and with me, steering me in the right direction for couches, tables, pillows, carpet, paint, and more. Alexa recommended people to build cabinets, stitch curtains, and hang drapes. She saved me from “boiling the ocean” by presenting me with a few well-considered options and in those rare instances where I didn’t love them, she cheerfully tried again until we were happy with the selection. As an example of her accomplishments, it’s worth noting that visitors invariably compliment us on our guest bathroom, every component of which was selected by Alexa. I would hire her again in a heartbeat.
